Building Bridges to God and Helping People Across
"It's urgent that you listen carefully to this: Anyone here who believes what I am saying right now and aligns himself with the Father, who has in fact put me in charge, has at this very moment the real, lasting life and is no longer condemned to be an outsider. This person has taken a giant step from the world of the dead to the world of the living.  -- John 5:24 (The Message)

The Gospel of Matthew

Matthew is my favorite book of the Bible.  It introduces us to Jesus, and you see clearly that Jesus had a tremendous heart for hurting people.  This is especially evident in chapters 8 and 9.

Matthew has the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5, 6, and 7), the Great Commission (chapter 28), and the Sheep and the Goats, my favorite chapter (chapter 25).
Note on Commentaries for Preachers or
People Who Want to Dig Really Deep

The Gospel of Matthew, A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary -- By Craig Keener - Keener's commentary gives you a real feel for the background of Matthew.  With Keener, you start to feel like you're there with Matthew and Jesus.  I love to have a commentary that gives the sermon a great flavor.

Matthew -- The New American Commentary -- By Craig L Blomberg -- Blomberg is rock solid in his interpretation.  While I don't get as good a feel as with Keener, you are anchored in the truth with Blomberg.

Matthew - Brazos Theological Commentary -- By Stanley Hauerwas -- This is the perfect companion to the other two commentaries.  Hauerwas gets to the why's of Matthew's stories in a way that helps us to understand the Gospel.
